ACUTE HEALTH EFFECTS: Soluble oxalates remove calcium from the bloodstream. This interferes with the central nervous system causing violent convulsions and death. CHONIC HEALTH EFFECTS: Prolonged exposure to oxalates can lead to kidney failure resulting from calcium oxalate precipitation in renal tubes.
